Why save North Dakota for last?

           Planning a North Dakota Trip

Flying into Fargo was a breeze! Allegiant, Sun Country, and Frontier, along with other major airlines, fly into Fargo. We were able to snag a $50 direct flight from Nashville on a Thursday night, even during the summer. Unfortunately, our flight didn't arrive until after 9:30 p.m., so the places we intended to eat had already closed. But Herds and Horns was open in the North Dakota State University area. We saw our first bison of the trip on the wall of the restaurant! Afterward, we walked around downtown and saw the Fargo Theater.  We stayed at the C'mon Inn, because "C'mon!" and it is right near the Visitor Center.  The hotel had at least seven hot tubs in the commons and pool areas. I bet it is hoppin' in the winter!

On Friday morning, we could hardly wait for the  Fargo/Moorhead Visitor’s Center to open for Leah to join the Best for Last Club! The Club is only for travelers who visit North Dakota as state #50 with the goal of visiting all 50 states. North Dakota is the only state who does this! Leah received a certificate and a Best for Last t-shirt. She posed by the Best for Last sign on the wall and was given giant 5 - 0 numbers to hold up for pictures. Another great picture opportunity was with the a North Dakota highway sign in the parking lot. For Fargo movie fans, you can take disturbing photos with a woodchipper inside or with another woodchipper outside.

We crossed the state border into Minnesota to visit the Hjemkonst Center. It has a unique, sea-worthy replica Viking ship and a wooden Norwegian Stave Church. And we had to see the Largest Dilly Dilly Bar at a historic Dairy Queen. After taking these sites in (and having our dessert first), we went to the Kringen Lodge, operated by the Sons of Norway, for an authentic Norwegian lunch.  The lodge was full of mostly regulars, but we received a warm welcome!  The Lefse Burger was unlike anything I ever had before. Delicious! We topped off lunch with Rhubarb pie. Unafraid of a second dessert, we tried chippers at Carol Widman’s Candy Co.  What is not to like about a chocolate-covered potato chip!

We absorbed a lot in our short time in Fargo before we began our I-94 Road Trip.
