One state will always hold the honor of being the final stop on an All Fifty journey. Often, we don’t give much thought to which state that will be—it simply becomes the last one by default. For example, with Alaska, Washington, and Oregon remaining, the best travel schedule and flight options will likely determine the order.
However, if you have just a few states left, it may be worth strategically planning your final stop. Your last state will always hold a special place in your heart, so make it memorable! Be sure to celebrate the completion of your journey in a way that feels special to you.

North Dakota is often the final state for many travelers because it’s not typically "on the way" to other destinations. Embracing this distinction, the state has turned it into a celebration by creating the Best for Last Club. This exclusive club is only for those who intentionally save North Dakota as their 50th state.
By visiting the Visitor’s Center, you’ll receive a commemorative certificate and t-shirt, along with great photo opportunities to mark the occasion. You might even meet fellow travelers who are also completing their journey!

South Dakota offers a truly patriotic way to celebrate the completion of your journey. At Mount Rushmore, walking the Avenue of Flags, which displays the flags of all 50 states and U.S. territories, provides a perfect moment to reflect on your travels. The Evening Lighting Ceremony, with patriotic music and the illuminated monument, creates a memorable and meaningful way to mark your achievement.

Hawaii is an incredible place to complete an All Fifty journey. With its stunning landscapes and endless activities, the islands offer a memorable way to celebrate. Though it’s a U.S. state, Hawaii has a rich and unique culture all its own, making it an exciting destination to explore.

Alaska is often the final state for many travelers due to the time and cost required to get there—but it’s absolutely worth it! The state's breathtaking beauty is truly unparalleled. Visiting Alaska is an adventure and a splurge in itself, offering a spectacular and unforgettable way to complete your journey.

While not a state, a journey to all 50 states is incomplete without a visit to Washington, D.C.. Since many travelers pass through the nation’s capital while visiting nearby Virginia or Maryland, it’s rarely the final stop. However, saving it for last would certainly make for a meaningful finish! Some All Fifty travelers even choose to return to Washington, D.C. to commemorate the completion of their journey in a truly special way.

Every state is a memorable place to complete your journey! Your final state will always hold a special place in your heart. Here are some ways All Fifty Club members have celebrated their achievement:
