Visiting presidential sites is a great way to learn American history- from birthplaces and childhood homes to presidential libraries, museums, and final resting places. Managed by the National Archives, the National Park Service, or private organizations, they offer a unique opportunity to learn about the lives, leadership, and enduring legacies of the presidents who helped shape our nation.

National Archives Managed Sites (NARA)

The Presidential Libraries Act of 1955 established a system of privately funded, federally maintained presidential libraries. Beginning with President Franklin D. Roosevelt, presidents and their supporters raised private funds to design and construct facilities that would preserve the records and artifacts of their administrations. Once completed, ownership of the library was transferred to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which operates and maintains the facility. Today's presidential libraries are more like museums than traditional libraries. They include impressive architecture, interactive museums, theaters, educational programs, archives, and research centers. Many are also located on the same grounds as a president's birthplace, childhood home, or final resting place.

Under the Presidential Records Act of 1978 and subsequent agreements with NARA, records are now maintained digitally rather than through a traditional research library. Starting with Obama, NARA preserves and provides access to the digital records of the Obama administration, while the privately funded Obama Presidential Center in Chicago was designed, built, and operates independently of NARA. This model is expected to continue for future presidential centers.

 

 

The Presidential Library Passport Program, created by NARA, allows visitors to collect a unique cancellation stamp at each NARA-managed presidential library. After collecting stamps from every participating library, travelers may present their completed passport at their final library to receive a Presidential Library Passport Collectible Coin (while supplies last). Similar to the popular National Park Passport program, the passport books are available for purchase at the presidential libraries (currently about $10) and provide a fun way to commemorate your journey through America's presidential history. The passports will be updated to have a stamp for the Obama Presidential Center and future libraries.
